Motel was born in Ostrow Mazowiecka and moved to Czyzewo as a young man. He was a very good businessman, not only owning a lumber yard there, but also owning the first electric mill concession in town. He traveled several times between Poland and the United States, the last time just one month before the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939.

Motel met Edith Ritholz and married her in the early 1940s. They had three children, Edward, Howard and Enid.
