Pavlovitch Adler (1855-1926) was one of America's
foremost Yiddish actors.
Born in Odessa, now located within the borders of the
Ukraine, Adler was first a Russian actor and starred in the
Yiddish theatre in Odessa, then in London, and finally in
New York City.
At his funeral, a eulogy was given by Jewish Daily Forward
editor Abraham Kahan who stated:
"Jacob Adler projected an influence toward a development
of that art and literature without which no nation can
progress. He made familiar to countless thousands the
classics of all nations, he fired the ambition of many
writers who have become famous and spurred others to
renewed effort. His life was an inspiration to all the
youth of our profession, irrespective of the land from
which they came."
