GRETEL SINGER IN THE MACCABI HAZA'IR
Gánovce, Slovakia
cir 1939

Maccabi Haza'ir was formed during the World Maccabi Conference in Czechoslovakia in 1929. The creation of this organization served as a catalyst for the creation of other such movements, especially in central European countries such as Czechoslovakia, Austria and Germany. Members were able to speak Hebrew and felt connected to Eretz Israel. This Zionist youth movement believed in "a healthy soul in a healthy body," so they stressed Jewish values and ethics along with the participation in sports that would serve to make the person physically fit. The movement encouraged its members to strive toward the attainment of these ideals, based on this spiritual and physical enrichmen,t and of course stressed their strong connection with Eretz Israel.
