Perhaps this photograph is of men who are teachers in a cheder;
perhaps they represent a yeshiva or the religious community of
Munkács as a whole.Whichever the case, it seems that the book in front of them on
the table, as it is front and center, is a book
of great importance to them, perhaps a volume of Mishnah, or
a different holy book that they study from.
What is known is that the bearded gentleman in the front row
center is of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager of Vishiva (now known
as Viseu de Sus, Romania), the son of Rabbi Yisroel Hager of
Viznits (now known as Vyzhnytsia, Ukraine.)
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager is thought to have visited Munkács
one summer; perhaps this is a photograph of his visit then,
perhaps taken as a record of his visit.
