HARRY SPREI AND HIS GRANDMOTHER
Tarnow, Poland
bef 1910

Harry is standing in the back row on the right; his grandmother is seated at the far left.

Harry was born in Tarnow, then Galicia, now Poland in 1896. He was left behind when his parents emigrated to London and eventually to New York City and he was raised by his grandmother. Harry left Tarnow in 1913 at the age of seventeen to live with his cousins in Duisburg in Northern Germany in order to get enough money to come to the U.S. In the picture below, Harry is standing in the rear all the way on the left. The picture was taken at the birthday party for his cousin, Leo Heim (also spelled Chaim) on May 3, 1914. Harry arrived in New York City in July 1914, just in time to avoid being conscripted into the German or Austrian army for World War I.
