** Search Tips  **

**Important notes on using the Museum's search engine:

The ability to search the Museum's content has been added in order that the visitor may more easily find whatever they are looking  for. This is done by entering a keyword in the field next to "Keyword" and clicking on the "Search" button.

Unfortunately, this search engine is rudimentary and is probably more effective when used with smaller websites (this site is quite large), and until a better search engine is implemented, your search may lead to results that are not always what you are looking for. At least a "score" is listed next to each search result, telling you the "closeness" of each match to your keyword. Therefore, the higher number, the better chance of a match.

Each of the search results are listed according to the page title, which is often abbreviated. The only way to know if any particular search result is what you are looking for is to click on any link and view the individual page.

Also, you may find that some of the links lead to web pages that have been previously deleted, and the message on the page will state that the pages is no longer available or cannot be found This, again, is unavoidable, at least for the time being.

By using this search engine, you may be able to better search such Museum lists as the Cemetery Project's "unique surnames" lists. To best do this, the Museum would suggest, for instance, that you type in the letters "cp", then a space, then the name of the town or deceased's surname. This may help you narrow down your search results. This is so because each of the individual town unique surnames pages have page names that begin with "cp-" (then the town name.) By searching by keyword, you can locate many different types of information, such as the names of officers and members that are inscribed on society gates, names of immigrants who left selected towns and cities in Europe, who entered the United States through Ellis Island, family photographs from the Museum's "Postcards from Home" exhibition by searching by town or surname), and more.

Again, this search engine is far from perfect, but is offered to you in the hope that your searching bill be made easier. Good luck!
