Lives in the Yiddish
SHORT BIOGRAPHIES OF THOSE INVOLVED IN
THE Yiddish THEATRE
aS DESCRIBED IN zALMEN zYLBERCWEIG'S "lEKSIKON FUN YIDISHN TEATER"
born on 10 July 1898 in Kishinev, Bessarabia. His father
was a theatre hairdresser. He studied in a cheder and in
a Russian folkshul.
and theatre showman Yankev Sternberg took him into the
guest-starring Vilna Troupe as a hairdresser.
Here he became a stand-in and came to act in episodic roles. Later,
after leaving the Vilna Troupe, he crossed over
to other, better Yiddish theatre ensembles. In this
manner, he acted
in 1927 in Fishzohn's "Muster teater (Model
Theatre)". In June 1928 he appeared with Baratov's troupe, afterwards in the same troupe when
it was under the direction of Itsikl Goldenberg. Later
he appeared in the Moldova Yiddish State Theatre.
"S. worked as a make-up artist in the Moldova Yiddish State Theatre,
and as an actor and masterful stage dancer. There was
not a single Yiddish dramatic circle in all of
Bucharest, or even in the whole of Rumania, where he
didn't earn a living, effortlessly. He was their popular and beloved by both the professional players and by amateurs all
over the land. He traveled freely among the dramatic
circles as a reader. Tragically he died as a martyr in
Sh. E. from Julian Schwartz.
