Leon Stav
(Herbst)

 

Born on 1 October 1901 in Rzheshov, Galicia. His father was a businessman. He completed a gymnasium and the philosophy facultat in Jagiellonski University in Krakow. Through a frequent attendance in the Polish theatre, he developed a desire for the stage and entered into the dramatic school under the pseudonym of Francizek Visotski.

In 1918 he joined the Yiddish Socialist Party and under its influence began to become interested in Yiddish, and he published in a Polish-translated collection of Sholem Aleichem, Peretz, Reyzen, Nomberg, Asch, Jonah Rozenfeld, Opatashu and also several stories in Polish and in Yiddish.

In 1926 S. became a member in the Krakow Yiddish theatre under the direction of Jonas Turkow, and in 1928 acted in the troupe of Kadish-Nekhamah. Later he became manager of Polish troupes.

S. was the secretary of the Krakow "Yiddish teater-gezelshaft (Jewish Theatre Society)", materially about Yiddish actors in Galicia.
