Chana Grosberg
(Mandeltort)

Chana Grosberg was born in 1900 in Lublin, Poland to a working-class family. From the age of nine she worked as a hat milliner.

In 1917 she appeared in the Hershkovitz troupe chorus which she conducted in the province. In 1918 she appeared in the Lodz Grand Theatre (Director M.D. Vaksman and Yolie Zandberg) where she appeared as “Li-Li” and sharply Anshel[?] “Shir hashirim”. After playing prima donnas for two years, she went over to the Warsaw's Skala Theatre to John von Subretin.

In 1920 she performed with the member troupe in Bialystok, and from there Chana moved to Lithuania where she performed under very difficult conditions for two years, being forced to make a living by singing Jewish and Russian songs in cabarets. She returned to Poland to join a company that she was still with in 1923 in Riga. Then she played in Warsaw's Sambatyon and with various troupes.

In 1927-28, Chana was engaged by Joseph Kessler in London, and between 1928-29, Chana performed again in Poland.
