Sarah Wertel, nee Sure Kalender, had a last known residence of Ostrow Mazowiecka, Poland.

Her father was Baruch Leib Kalender and her mother was Fruma Etka Gniazdowicz, sister to my

paternal grandfather, Srul Gniazdowicz. It is possible that Baruch and Fruma Etka spent part of

their lives in Brok, Poland, where they may have raised other children. Her parents never emigrated

from Poland. She immigrated via Ellis Island on 30 Jun 1921 aboard the S.S. Mount Clinton, having

departed from Hamburg. Her contact in the United States upon her arrival was brother-in-law

Harry Leibiker, who at the time was living on the Lower East Side at 138 Monroe Street.

Sarah married Morris Wertel on 26 Feb 1923 at 207 Clinton Street, and lived for a time on

Montgomery Street in Lower Manhattan. They were known in later years to reside in the Bronx.

Sarah is shown here, seated at the far right, next to my maternal grandparents Flora and Harry Ness. The four people standing have not been identified.
