In the northeast part of Poland, in the former Lomza Gubernia,
there was a town called Sniadowo, in which there lived many Jews.
Among them lived my maternal
grandfather, Harry Ness (then Avraham Chone Gniazdowicz), along
with his
parents, siblings, cousins et al.
Young
Chone is pictured below with his parents, Yisroel and Rivka Gniazdowicz.
(Presumably the Gniazdowicz surname was derived from
the nearby shtetl of Gniazdowo). Yisroel, I believed, owned and
ran a flour mill not far away from where he and his family
lived.
Perhaps this photograph was taken at a local photographic
studio, or more likely in a studio in the larger, nearby town of Lomza,
taken as a
remembrance before Chone's emigration from Poland to
the United States in 1906 or 1907.
Many families took such
photographs before the emigration of a family member, no doubt
as a keepsake or remembrance ...
