This is a photo of Cheim before his departure for the United
States in 1878.
He spent between ten and twenty years in Iowa before going to Pennsylvania
and then New York where he married, had four children and
spent the rest of his life.
In the United States he began working as a peddler,
traveling a route around Iowa and buying goods in Chicago.
He was traveling by horse and buggy and was a boarder before
he could afford his own apartment in Des Moines, Iowa. At
first he primarily sold collars and cuffs. In New York he
became a manufacturer of hoop skirts. He passed away in
1932.
