Adolph Gimpel

G. was born on 17 January 1875 in Lemberg, Galicia, a son of Yaakov Ber (Gimpel).

He learned in a two-class gymnasium in the Lemberg Conservatory.

He performed as a clarinetist in the city opera, and later went with Efrayim Perlmutter to America, where G. became an orchestra conductor in his father's theatre. He conducted the orchestras in many operettas that he had brought over ofrom America, from which he received only "directions" or  primshtymen. The local orchestra's operettas went afterwards into the repertories of the Yiddish theatres in Europe.

G.'s three sons were musicians, and one, Branislav, is a famous virtuoso.
