L. was born in 1866 in Warsaw, Poland. His father was a traveler (salesman?) for a lumber firm.

He learned in cheders and in a Polish school. He possessed a beautiful voice and a leaning toward his melodies, thus he became a singer in Britain(?), got married and afterwards a Yiddish folksinger. Later he entered into a Ukrainian troupe as a singer and dancer and from there went into the chorus and danced in the Yiddish troupes of Fishzon and Spivakovski.

In 1905 he began to perform in character roles in the troupe of Spivakovski and Sam Adler in Peterburg, then he acted with the troupe in Warsaw. Later he performed with Kaminski and several years with Zandberg in Lodz's Grand Theatre, then by himself he performed with troupes across the Polish province until the World War when he settled in Russia, where he had already performed on the state, being for a certain period the director of a Yiddish troupe in Irkutsk, Siberia.
