L. was born  on 7 March 1904 in Lemberg, Galicia.

His father was the owner of a colonial store. He completed a folkshul and a five-class gymnasium. As a child he participated in children's productions.

In 1921 he founded together with several youngsters a dramatic circle known as "Mendele", and he directed in the environs of Lemberg literary one-acters.

In 1925 he was taken into the Polish dramatic school of Lemberg's conservatory and he finished in 1927, working at the same time in the Yiddish dramatic group known as the "Jacob Gordin Union", and he directed the dramatic group known as  "I. L. Peretz Club".

In 1927 he attempted to found for the Yiddish student and graduates of the Polish dramatic school a Yiddish studio, but it wasn't implemented and he joined up with the guest-starring Vilna Troupe, with whom he acts until today.
