Moyshe Lifshits [Livshits]
(Livshits; Moses Liwschitz)

 

Born on 18 May 1894 in Belaya Tserkov, Kiev Gubernia, Ukraine. Father -- a melamed (religious teacher). He learned with his father in a cheder, then in a gymnasium. At age ten he wrote a Russian song about the death of Dr. Herzl. Later he moved to Galicia, and in 1914 debuted in Lemberg's "Interesanten blat", then participated with songs in critical articles in various periodic editions in Galicia, Vienna and Berlin.

L. composed "Der vald-kisr" (Kiev publishing house, 1918), a children's play that was performed many times in children's schools in Russia and the Ukraine, and "A mayse mit Hershele Ostropolier (A Tale of Hershele Ostropolier), an oysgetrakhte comedy in four acts, staged and directed by Dr. Michael Weichert, melodies by H. Kon, sets and costumes by V. Weintraub, folkshtik and dance -- Leah Rotbaum", which on 11 January 1930 was staged in Krakow by the "Vilna Troupe".

L. also translated Kaiser's plays "Fun in der fri biz baynakht", which on 21 September 1931 was staged by Al. Granach in new York's Public Theatre.

He adapted the text of the Hebrew translation of Gutzkow's "Uriel Acosta", which was performed by the "Habimah".

He composed for the "Habimah" a play "Gzrs t'h", and had in manuscript a drama called "Sdum".
