L. was born on 15 December
1892 in Vilna, Polish Lithuania. He learned in a cheder
and afterwards completed Cohen's gymnasium.
After the gymnasium he
participated in the student productions in Russian, and
demonstrating his abilities he entered into the
dramatic courses of the Russian regisseur Straganov-Bobrov, which he
completed together with his
sister Sonia (later Alomis), afterwards participating
in various Yiddish amateur productions.
From Vilna he traveled to to
Leipzig to study medicine and there completed
five-and-a-half semesters. In Leipzig L. founded a
dramatic circle with the local Yiddish academic cultural
union.
After participating for more
than three years in the World War, he returned to Vilna
and for the first time participated professionally in
the Vilna Yiddish State Theatre. In 1919 he entered into
the theatre with the Vilna Yiddish Theatre Society, and
in 1922 went over to the Vilna Troupe, with whom he went
on tour across Western Europe. From 1924-1927 he acted
with the Vilna Troupe in America, and in 1930 for a
short time acted withAsro-Alomis in
Belgium.
