1931-1969
 

Yelena Menes


 

Born on 27 August 1905 in Warsaw, Poland. Her father, brother and uncle were all painters, and her great grandfather was a Yiddish actor [?].

In 1914 she moved with her family to Kharkov, where M. entered into a gymnasium.

From childhood on she strove to become a dancer, and at the age of ten she performed in a Kharkov dance school, where she also had the opportunity to perform in public. From 1916 until 1922 she worked in a Kharkov Folks House, performing in concerts and also participated in the Kharkov State Opera as a soloist for ballet and directed ballet in various theatres.

In 1922-3 she studied with Mordik in Moscow, and at the same time she participated in concerts and in theatre productions. From 1923-5 M. participated in various musical-dramatic societies in Kharkov and in the Kharkov State Children's Theatre. Since 1925 M. has choreographed and directed and danced ballet in Moscow's Yiddish State Theatre.
