Morris Novikov
(Bakhnov)

 

Born on 17 June 1892 in Kherson, Ukraine. His father was an architect. He learned in Odessa and later, being in Argentina, completed a music school. He began his stage career as a conductor in Buenos Aires and due to an accident represented in 1913 in Mareniof's troupe an actor in the role of "Binyamin" in Schorr's "A mentsh zol men zeyn". Since then N. has remained to act in lover roles under the pseudonym of Bakhnov. Later N. became a co-partner with the direction and also the staging of the better plays (of Hirshbein, Peretz, Kobrin and Nomberg's "Mishpakha").

In Argentina N. also acted in Ukrainian.

He came to America, and N. acted in Philadelphia's Arch Street Theatre. In 1927-8 he was the manager and main role player in the Paley Theatre in Baltimore, 1928-9 -- he acted in various cities of America, 1929-30 -- he was director and chief role player in Toronto (Canada). In the summer of 1930 he guest-starred in Belgium, France and other European countries, then he went to America, where he acted in 1932 in Detroit.
