Ruchel-Leah Paul

P. was born in Lemberg, Galicia to Orthodox parents and received a traditional upbringing. As a child she performed on various occasions singing Yiddish songs. Later she became a singer and then a prima donna at Gimpel’s Theatre, and in the end moved to the Polish theatre where she appeared until 1914.

She arrived in the United States in 1914 and married actor Joseph Paul with whom she appeared with in the “single toyrns?” and “sketches” in vaudeville houses. Then P. moved to the legitimate theatre and acted with Harry Feld, Sonia Vidov (Laskovsky) in the part of Isaac in "Akedat yitzhak" ("The Sacrifice of Isaac"), the part of Shulamit with the Lemberg Jewish actor Finkelstein. Later, she and her husband traveled around with a Yiddish group in towns and villages of the United States. For almost two years she played as prima donna with Shechter and Lasky in the Bronx.

Paul’s daughter, Dvoraleh, acted in children’s roles with Lucy German.

Later Paul, her husband and daughter occasionally appeared in Yiddish plays, and since the death of her husband (12 April 1957), she performs alone as an actor or singer.
