Shmuel Shefner

 

Sh. was born on 18 June 1895 in Lodz, Poland. His father was a tinsmith. He began to act in Yiddish theatre with Anna and Chaim Jacobowitz in Lodz's Flora Theatre in one-acters, then, here with his sister Esther and Shlomo Kutner. Later he performed across the province with the Jacobovwitzs and he acted in character roles in the operetta "Khantshe in amerika", "Di amerikanerin", et al.

He was engaged in Lodz's Skala Theatre under the direction of S. Kuperman in the miniature repertoire with Lola Patroni and the Kustins. Afterwards he traveled to Germany, where he acted in Yiddish theatre and continued to act for a long time with his sister Malka and brother Jacob and Esther Perlman, in Frankfurt-au-Main with director Adolph Mida, together with Sh.'s brother Jacob and Esther Perlman, to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he acted earlier in the Amba Theatre, and he went afterwards across to the Excelsior Theatre (direction by Axelrad). Winning the lottery of the great prize of 40,000 dollars, he traveled to Europe the see the family, visiting Paris, Belgium, Lodz, again Paris, becoming a businessman settling in Frankfurt-au-Main.
