John Vays

He was in July 1876 in Iasi, Romania.

His father was a merchant of fur ware, who would later immigrate to America.

He studied in a cheder and later in a Romanian school.

At the age of twelve he came to America, studying here at night school and became an errand boy in a sheet factory and worked later in a brass [mesh] factory for children’s clothing and for caps.

Later he studied woodcarving for a year through Baron Hirsh, worked for a short time in this profession, afterwards as a room painter. During the same time V. was active in the Jewish Workers Movement, and often went out as a “declamator” and in the end a variety actor.

V. was for several years the manager of Local 5, and was a member of the committee to unite the unions, and was a member in “Managers” Association [?]

In 1925-26 V. acted in “Abbey’s Irish Rose” with an English provincial troupe. Later he was in various Yiddish theatres.
