Ester Zevkina
(Zevka)
 

 

Z. was born on 20 February 1900 in Ostroleka, Lomza Gubernia, Poland.

Her father was earlier the head of a yeshiva, and as an elder a teacher in a Talmud Torah in Bialystok, wherever the family had performed in. She completed "Kaplan's Women's School".

As a member in Bialystok's "Hazamir", she participated in the productions of the dramatic section. From there Z. became engaged in a Yiddish vaudeville troupe and from there in Sokolov's "Yiddish Folks-Theatre", with whom she also went to Riga with, where she remained for eight years, participating in the various Yiddish troupes with which she played there during the course of this time. Here she worked several times in dramatic and operetta productions in German.

In 1927-28 Z. acted in the Lodz Yiddish Friends members troupe. Afterwards he traveled across the Polish province, and in 1929 acted in Paris and later in London.

Z. also participated in the film "Di reyze mit shmerungen".

Z. is the wife of actor Israel Birnbaym.
